Climate change – how it affects our planet
The change in our climate is leading to some extreme weather – hurricanes, floods and heatwaves. Recent floods locally show that this is something that concerns all of us, and we can all help to reduce our impact on the environment.

Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas contributes to climate change, with over 75% of world greenhouse gas emissions. When we use these fuels to power our cars, create electricity, or heat our homes, we indirectly release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap carbon dioxide (CO₂) and heat from the sun and cause our planet to warm up.
What can we do?
As a housing provider, we understand that we can help reduce energy demand by ensuring our homes are:
- Energy efficient – so heat is kept inside the home, reducing the heat demand in the home
- Ventilated – to prevent damp and mould
- Sustainable – by investing in modern, newer technologies.
If we can reduce energy demand we’ll cut down the amount of carbon emissions we are generating. With buildings accounting for approximately 25% of greenhouse gas emissions, bpha has a role to play in ensuring its properties are energy efficient and meet certain standards to show we have reduced carbon emissions.
We have already carried out energy efficiency improvements to a large number of properties.
Some of the measures we have installed are:
- Eternal wall insulation
- Cavity wall insulation
- Internal wall insulation
- PV/solar panels
- Solar water heating
- Air source heat pumps
- Improved ventilations
- High performance doors and windows.
Between now and 2030, we will be contacting customers whose homes could benefit from improved energy efficiency, and we will carry out a retrofit survey. The survey will help identify which works need to be carried out to increase your homes energy efficiency. We’ll check what measures are already in place and what is suitable for your property depending on the build type, size and number of people living in there. The survey will take no more than two hours and will include photos being taken.
What can you do?
We all have a role to play, and can all help contribute to a more sustainable future.
Save Energy: One of the easiest ways to help is by saving energy daily. Turn off lights when you're not using them, unplug devices when they're not in use, and close doors and windows to keep heat from escaping.
Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: We can all do our part to reduce waste by reusing and recycling items whenever possible. For example, instead of buying new things, try fixing broken items or repurposing them for a different use. And remember to recycle paper, plastic, glass, and other materials to help keep our planet clean and green.
Transport: most cars are fuelled by petrol, a fossil fuel, which releases greenhouse gases when it is burned. It is much better for the planet to walk or cycle if you can. If you need to travel further, check if you can use public transport.
Enable us to make these improvements to your home by allowing us in to carry out energy efficiency surveys and works, and asking us about what plans we have for your home.
