Be water wise

Why saving water matters

Most of us take our water supply for granted, after all, you turn on the tap and there it is. However, increasing droughts and the fact that our region has, on average, a third less rainfall than the rest of England mean we need to play an active part in protecting our supply.

Using water wisely helps protect the environment and supports long‑term water availability. And if you’re on a water meter, reducing your usage directly benefits your bank balance too.

If you are worried about your water bill, please speak with our Money Advice team for guidance.

Simple ways to save water at home

  • Turning taps off while brushing teeth or shaving can save two bucket loads of water each day*
  • Shorter showers generally use less water than baths – showering for one minute less can save 28,000 litres of water over a year*
  • Washing machines and dishwashers are most efficient when used with full loads. You can also try using them on eco-friendly settings, which use 30% - 50% less water.
  • Fixing dripping taps prevents water from being wasted. If you’re a rental customer, you can report leaks to the CCC.

Using water carefully outdoors

  • Wash cars less often during dry periods or use a bucket instead of a hose.
  • Choosing drought‑tolerant plants can reduce the need for frequent watering
  • Collecting rainwater is an effective way to water plants during any dry spells that follow
