It’s not always easy to know where to turn if you’re in debt. Jenny* was referred to bpha’s Money Advice service and has shared how she worked the team to take back control of her finances.

“I have chronic fatigue syndrome which means I can only work 16 hours a week. I was receiving some benefits but was struggling and found myself in arrears with my rent, something that has never happened in the 15 years that I have lived in my bpha home, and in some additional debt.
“I was advised to contact the Money Advice Team and spoke with Ashley, who thoroughly analysed my circumstances. He advised me to change to Universal Credit from Working/Child Tax Credits - which I had thought would make me worse off, but to my surprise I was better off!
“I discussed my health issues with Ashley, and he helped me step by step through applying for a Personal Independence Payment (PIP), something that I did not know I was eligible for. I believe that had I not got in contact with the team, my debt would have escalated but thanks to Ashley, a payment plan was put in place for my arrears, I was swapped to Universal Credit and I am now receiving a PIP.”
What’s a Personal Independence Payment?
PIP is extra money to help you with everyday life if you've an illness, disability or mental health condition. There are two parts: a daily living part, if you need help with everyday tasks, and a mobility part, if you need help getting around. I receive tax credits, should I switch to Universal Credit?
